Definition

The NFI-R and NFIFAM is comprised of six independent scales reflecting problems frequently experienced by TBI patients: Depression, Somatic, Memory/Attention, Communication, Aggression, and Motor. Separate patient and family forms of the NFI-R were designed to collect the unique perspectives offered by both the injured individual and a second party family observer. Normative scales are provided for both patient and family member ratings of patient behavior based upon patient age and the amount of time the patient was unconscious at the time of injury.

Details

Questions for the 76 items of the Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory (NFI-R), as asked of the person with brain injury and a significant other/family member at the time of the annual evaluation.

The NFI-R can be mailed to the patient in advance of the follow-up appointment, so that the questionnaire can be completed ahead of time. The actual code for each question is entered into the computer database. The six scales will be calculated by the National Data Center. For details on calculating the scale scores, see Appendix L of the TBI Model Systems National Database Syllabus.

If a person with brain injury is living in a skilled nursing facility at the time of annual follow-up; the NFI-R should still be completed. This will be taken into consideration during analysis of data.

If the NFI is self-administered and the patient: 1) leaves an item blank, code that item as unknown/missing; 2) checks more than one response for an item, code the response with the highest number; 3) feels a question is not applicable to them, code as unknown/missing.

*The NFI is administered to persons who speak foreign languages and to persons with visual impairment.
